June CareerPassport Spotlight -- Janeth Paredes

June CareerPassport Spotlight

Janeth  Paredes

CareerPassport Team- What is your status in school, and what are you majoring in?
Janeth - I’ve been a junior for far too long, and I’m majoring in Education.

CareerPassport Team- Tell us what some of your career goals are.
Janeth - I want to teach and advise K-12 students, work in school administration, and be the best person at my job. I have many goals, but at the end of the day I want to be in a position that would allow me to help others. I want to promote education and help others become successful, not only in school, but in life.

CareerPassport Team- What attracted you to the CareerPassport Program?
Janeth - When I found out about the program, I was going through difficult times regarding my career choice. I thought that by participating in the CareerPassport Program I would be able to discover what I should do and so I signed up. I was in for a big surprise.

CareerPassport Team- How you are participating in the CareerPassport Program?
Janeth - I am one of the students that became involved in CareerPassport during its pilot phase. I have taken advantage of the opportunities the CareerPassport Program offers, such as the focus groups, club activities, lecture series, the end of the year retreat, and the mentoring program. Overall, CareerPassport has helped me discover myself through every activity I am engaged in. The staff is wonderful and willing to help in any way they can, and if they can’t they will find the answer.

CareerPassport Team- Tell us about some of your achievements from the CareerPassport Program.
Janeth - Currently I am working towards completing the Self-Discovery Track. It has been challenging since it is all about discovering who you are. Nevertheless, this track has helped me become a better person.

CareerPassport Team- What have you enjoyed most about the program?
Janeth - I enjoy every single aspect of this program, the staff, the activities, the tracks, being with fellow students, just everything. One thing that stands out to me is the mentoring program. I enjoy developing a relationship with a mentor that knows a lot and is willing to share her experiences with me. In truth, CareerPassport is more than a program to me, it has become a part of my life and I am grateful for that.

CareerPassport Team- What has been the most beneficial activity you’ve participated in to help you meet your future career goal?
Janeth - Even though my goal in this program was to find an optional career choice, I rediscovered my passion for Education. To my surprise the discoveries I found about myself from the track activities always pointed to Education, and even though I was under circumstances that blocked me from applying to the School of Education, I became aware that no other major would fill me with the enthusiasm that Education does. Honestly, I could be anything, but I choose to be an educator because that is what makes me happy, CareerPassport helped me acknowledge that.

CareerPassport Team- What advice regarding the CareerPassport Program would you give to other students?
Janeth - If you like to discover new things and be actively learning about your future, then become involved. You work at your own pace and the benefit is 100% for you! For current CareerPassport students, don’t be afraid to unveil your passion and don’t be frightened by the tracks. The activities and reflection from each track can be time consuming, but it is an investment in your life. There is no grading, so turn off your student mode and enjoy.
